The Gold Goes Everywhere, or, Pre-Industrial Tooling

  • The Morgan Conservatory 1754 East 47th Street Cleveland, OH, 44103 United States (map)

For centuries, egg glair and gold leaf were the principle means by which books were titled and decorated. Gold leaf was laid on an area prepared with paste, glair, and grease. Heated tools were then used to build elegant yet quirky designs. You will learn the essentials of this method, including leather preparation, and proper handling of tools and gold leaf. We will make a batch of glair, fall in love with the magic of gold erasers, and most importantly learn how to trouble shoot! You will practice on a small plaquette and tool a design on a model book spine.
